Pineapple Teriyaki Sauce

I hope you are ready for what's coming. I have an incredibly amazing, easy to make teriyaki sauce recipe for you. And the reason I get so excited about it is, not only because of how tasty it is but because of the ingredients it is made with. 

If you look up recipes on the web, you will find that teriyaki sauce has a ridiculously insane amount of refined sugar. For many years I thought that was the only way to get that sweet and sour flavour. But fortunately, I was wrong. 

The teriyaki sauce we are making is completely refined sugar-free. And since we are leaving the sugar out of the equation we needed something else to sweeten things up. So I recurred to one of my favourite ingredients to make food sweet. Fruit! 

I think fruit is Earth's candy. It's so colourful, flavourful and in its majority it’s super sweet. We can take advantage of all that added to the many health benefits fruit has to offer. It's a win-win situation from whatever angle you see it. 

Chopped pineapple

For this particular recipe, we are using pineapple, one of the most delicious fruits there is. It has the exact combination of flavours we are looking for our teriyaki sauce: sweet and sour. 

Pineapples can be tricky. We want a ripe pineapple to make sure we are adding sweetness more than anything else. If it's not ripe enough you can end up with a super sour or bland tasting pulp, hence it won't do much good to our teriyaki sauce. So make sure you take your time when you are choosing your pineapple. 

Also, do not be tempted to use pineapple juice. First of all, we are avoiding refined sugar and most juices found at the store have so much sugar it is scary. And second, the pulp of the pineapple is going to give a lot of body to our teriyaki sauce, otherwise, it will be super runny.  

Mixing the pineapple teriyaki sauce ingredients

We want our sauce to be thick, as teriyaki sauce is. At home, I usually make this sauce to season tempeh for a Sticky Miso Rice with Teriyaki Tempeh recipe. And the sauce needs that thicker consistency to really cover the slices of tempeh. You can throw the pineapple in the blender but I rather use a food processor since this fruit is so stringy, the blender won't break those annoying strings. 

Aside from the pineapple the rest of the ingredients you most likely already have in your pantry. We will need minced garlic, grated ginger, olive oil, soy sauce, sesame oil and toasted sesame seeds. Just mix everything together and you will have a delicious freshly made teriyaki sauce. 

You will never want to buy teriyaki sauce at the store ever again. Once you've tried this recipe you will notice how unnecessarily sweet the other stuff is. At home we really have a hard time eating it, so I rather make my own. It's fresh, it's healthy, easy to make delicious and as I said, incredibly amazing!

Finished pinapple teriyaki sauce

  • 1 cm fresh ginger (finely grated)
  • 1 clove garlic (minced)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • ¼ pineapple
  • 1 tsp sesame seeds (toasted)
  • 59 g soy sauce
  • ½ tsp toasted sesame oil


  1. Cut the skin and eyes off the pineapple and the pineapple then into chunks, discarding the hard, white center.
  2. Place the pineapple into a blender or food processor and blend until smooth.
  3. In a bowl, mix all the ingredients together, including the pineapple and serve immediately.
